So, you’ve survived your pre-reg year and you’ve worked your tail off to pass your exams. But, what next? The big bad world of work is upon you and it is up to you to embrace it with open arms! Pharmacy has changed over the past decade and there are more options available to you now for your career, than ever before.
Career options include working within research & academia, assisting and pursuing change within universities and clinics. Many people undertake a career working within a hospital setting, this can be a strenuous but rewarding career path with many avenues into management and other strategic roles.
New pharmacy roles within general practice are catching the attention of pharmacists across the UK. This is a new opportunity for our profession to link up primary care, general practice, nursing, clinical and pharmacy services. The hours of work and diversity of the workload available means that these roles are in high demand.
Community pharmacy is another popular role and requires more business acumen, which may suit a more experienced pharmacist. Community pharmacists are patient facing, will diagnose and recommend treatments and medicines for patients in local areas. You also have the responsibility, and rewards of running your own business. You’ll need an eye for finance, staffing, resourcing and stock control. (It is possible to work in a community pharmacy setting without owning the business.)
We are in regular contact with pharmacists who work in a humanitarian capacity. One of our locums is currently working in El Salvador with the Red Cross! She’ll admit that the pay isn’t great, but that she would never have had the life experiences offered to her there if she had stayed in a more traditional role.
Many newly qualified pharmacists tend to undertake locum work. Locum work gives you a variety of experiences, working in different location with a variety of teams. It’s a fantastic way to improve your clinical skills and the opportunity to work in multiple locations can give you the flexibility to travel around the UK and Ireland, while earning some great money!
At Locate a Locum, we can guarantee that you find locum work when and where you need it. We also offer a permanent recruitment service with which you can avail of a free careers consultation with one of the UK’s top pharmacist recruiters, who will endeavour to create a permanent opportunity for you.
